A

Vienna

Hotel, address or Vienna Airport Departure

Pickup at your hotel, apartment or address in Vienna, or at Vienna Airport (VIE) south-east of the city. From the centre the road heads west onto the A1 West Autobahn.

★
Optional stop

Melk Abbey

Short detour from the A1

Past St. Pölten the Benedictine abbey of Melk stands right beside the motorway — an easy first break, early in the drive.

★
Optional stop

Linz

Detour into the centre

The motorway passes the edge of the Upper Austrian capital; a break means a detour into the centre at the Hauptplatz.

⚑
Border crossing

Austria → Germany border (Braunau am Inn / Simbach am Inn)

En route

After the A25 and the Innkreis A8, the road crosses the Inn from Braunau into Simbach. This is a Schengen-internal crossing, but police checks or temporary border controls may occur, so keep a passport or national ID card within reach.

Hotel, Hauptbahnhof or Munich Airport ~4h 25m driving, plus stops

The A94 through Altötting and Mühldorf leads into Munich from the east: drop-off at your hotel or address, at München Hauptbahnhof, or at Munich Airport (MUC) north-east of the city.

Going the other way? Munich to Vienna drives east from Bavaria to the Austrian capital.

Munich → Vienna →

Vienna to Munich — what to expect

Vienna to Munich is about 404 km by road. From Vienna the A1 West Autobahn runs past St. Pölten, Melk and Linz; the A25 by Wels and the Innkreis A8 continue to the Inn, which the route crosses from Braunau am Inn into Simbach, and the A94 through Altötting and Mühldorf leads into Munich. The other common line stays on the A1 to Salzburg and takes the A8 via Rosenheim; the driver picks on the day, or follows the Salzburg line if you want to stop there. Allow about 4h 25m of driving without breaks.

Private transfer vs train and bus

Direct trains run between Vienna and Munich. Long-distance coach journeys operate as well; check the current timetable before travelling. A private transfer collects you at your Vienna address or at the airport and drops you exactly where you need to be in Munich — your hotel, the Hauptbahnhof or the airport — with no transfer between stations.

Border and documents

Austria and Germany are both in the Schengen area, so the crossing — Braunau/Simbach on the usual line, or Walserberg near Salzburg on the A8 — is internal. Police checks or temporary border controls may occur. Every passenger should carry a valid passport or national ID card; allow some flexibility in journey time, especially before a flight.

Pickup in Vienna, arrival in Munich

We collect you from hotels, apartments and addresses in Vienna, or from Vienna Airport (VIE). Address pickups include 15 minutes of free waiting. In Munich we drop off at your hotel or address, at München Hauptbahnhof close to the centre, or at Munich Airport (MUC), about 39 km from the city centre near Freising.

Breaks on the way west

  • Melk Abbey — the Benedictine abbey beside the A1, a short detour
  • Linz — the Upper Austrian capital, a detour into the centre
  • Salzburg — the old town, on the A8 line via Salzburg instead of Braunau
  • Chiemsee — the lake shore at Prien, also on the line via Salzburg
💡 Tip: Flying out of Munich? The airport is north-east of the city, so from Vienna it is slightly shorter to drive straight there — about 400 km — than to go into the centre first. Give us your flight time and we plan the departure from Vienna with room for traffic and the border.
