Vienna to Lake Bled — what to expect

Vienna to Lake Bled is about 373 km by road. The route leaves Vienna on the A2 Süd Autobahn, crosses the Semmering on the S6, follows the S36 through the Mur valley and continues to Klagenfurt, then on the A2 past Villach to the A11 and the Karawanken tunnel into Slovenia. From the tunnel the Slovenian A2 runs down to Bled. Allow about four and a half hours without stops; traffic, breaks and the border add to that.

Private transfer vs train and bus

How do you get from Vienna to Lake Bled by public transport? There is no direct train and no direct bus. Rail journeys change, for example at Villach, and arrive at Lesce-Bled station, about 4 km from the town; check the current timetable before travelling. A private transfer is the door-to-door option: from your Vienna hotel or straight off a flight at Vienna Airport to your hotel in Bled, with your luggage in the car the whole way and a break by the Wörthersee if you want one.

Border and documents

Austria and Slovenia are both in the Schengen area, so the crossing in the Karawanken tunnel is an internal border, but police checks or temporary border controls may occur. Every passenger should carry a valid passport or national ID card and keep it within reach; allow some flexibility in journey time.

Pickup in Vienna, arrival at Lake Bled

We pick up from hotels and addresses in Vienna and from Vienna Airport (VIE) at Schwechat. Address pickups include 15 minutes of free waiting. In Bled we drive to your hotel, guesthouse or apartment; for places on the lake shore, send the exact address with your request.

Stops worth adding

  • Velden am Wörthersee — lakeside resort on the way, about 4 min extra driving
  • Radovljica — old town just before Bled, about 9 min extra driving
  • Klagenfurt — the Carinthian capital on the Wörthersee, about 11 min extra driving
  • Villach — on the A2 before the Karawanken tunnel, about 22 min extra driving
  • Graz — the Styrian capital, via a different motorway, about 24 min extra driving
💡 Tip: Four and a half hours is a long sit. A comfort stop can be planned on request — the Wörthersee is the natural place for it, since Velden adds only about 4 minutes of driving. Tell us when you would like to arrive in Bled and we suggest a departure time from Vienna.
