Vienna

Hotel, address or Vienna Airport Departure

Collected from your hotel or address in Vienna, or from Vienna Airport (VIE) at Schwechat. The car heads south out of the city on the A2.

★
Optional stop

Graz

About 22 min extra driving

Graz, the capital of Styria, lies where the A2 meets the A9 Pyhrn motorway — a good place to stretch your legs before the first border.

⚑
Border crossing

Austria → Slovenia border (Spielfeld / Šentilj)

En route

The first of two Schengen-internal crossings. Police checks or temporary border controls may occur, so keep a passport or national ID card at hand.

★
Optional stop

Maribor or Ptuj

About 13 min extra driving

Maribor lies on the Slovenian A1 soon after the border; Ptuj is on the A4 towards Croatia. Either adds about 13 minutes of driving plus your time there.

⚑
Border crossing

Slovenia → Croatia border (Gruškovje / Macelj)

En route

The second Schengen-internal crossing, onto the Croatian A2. Checks may occur here as well; allow some flexibility in journey time.

★
On the road

Rastoke (Slunj)

About 1 min extra driving

After the motorway bypasses Zagreb and reaches Karlovac, the D1 runs south through Slunj. The watermill village of Rastoke sits right on this road, so a stop there costs almost no extra driving — only the time you spend walking around.

Vienna to Plitvice Lakes — what to expect

Vienna to Plitvice Lakes is about 488 km by road through Austria, Slovenia and Croatia. The route follows the A2 and A9 past Graz to the Slovenian border at Spielfeld/Šentilj, the Slovenian A1 by Maribor and the A4 past Ptuj to the Croatian border at Gruškovje/Macelj, then the Croatian A2 and the Zagreb bypass onto the A1 as far as Karlovac. Private transfer vs train and bus

There is no direct bus or train from Vienna to Plitvice; public transport needs a change in Zagreb, so check the current timetable before travelling. A private transfer takes you from your Vienna hotel or Vienna Airport straight to the park entrance or your accommodation, with your luggage in the car and stops where you want them.

Two borders and documents

Austria, Slovenia and Croatia are all in the Schengen area, so both crossings are Schengen-internal. Police checks or temporary border controls may occur at either one. Every passenger should carry a valid passport or national ID card and keep it within reach; allow some flexibility in journey time.

Stops worth adding

  • Rastoke (Slunj) — watermill village directly on the road, about 1 min extra driving
  • Karlovac — where the motorway meets the road south, about 4 min extra driving
  • Maribor — on the Slovenian A1 after the first border, about 13 min extra driving
  • Ptuj — town on the A4 towards Croatia, about 13 min extra driving
  • Graz — capital of Styria, about 22 min extra driving to the centre
💡 Tip: This is a long drive, so a comfort stop on the way can be planned on request — tell us where you would like it. If you plan to walk the lakes on the day you arrive, an early start from Vienna leaves you more daylight in the park.
