A

Munich

Hotel, address or Munich Airport Departure

Pickup at your hotel, apartment or address in Munich, at München Hauptbahnhof, or at Munich Airport (MUC) north-east of the city. The usual line leaves Munich eastwards on the A94 through Mühldorf and Altötting.

⚑
Border crossing

Germany → Austria border (Simbach am Inn / Braunau am Inn)

En route

The road crosses the Inn bridge from Simbach into Braunau. The crossing is Schengen-internal; police checks or temporary border controls may occur, so keep a passport or national ID card at hand.

★
Optional stop

Linz

About 25 min extra driving

The A25 and A1 skirt Linz; a stop in the centre at the Hauptplatz adds roughly 25 minutes of driving, plus the time you spend there.

★
Optional stop

Melk Abbey

About 8 min extra driving

The Benedictine abbey stands right beside the A1. It is the easiest break on the route — only a few minutes off the motorway, in the last part of the drive.

B

Vienna

Hotel, address or Vienna Airport ~4h 25m driving, plus stops

The A1 West Autobahn past St. Pölten brings you into Vienna from the west: drop-off at your hotel or address anywhere in the city, or at Vienna Airport (VIE) if you fly on.

Munich to Vienna — what to expect

By road, Munich to Vienna is about 404 km. The usual line leaves Munich on the A94 through Mühldorf and Altötting, crosses the Inn from Simbach into Braunau am Inn, and joins the Innkreis A8, the A25 by Wels and the A1 West Autobahn past Linz, Melk and St. Pölten into Vienna. The classic alternative is the A8 via Rosenheim and Salzburg, which joins the same A1; the driver picks the line on the day, or follows the one you ask for if you want to stop in Salzburg. Allow about 4h 25m of driving without breaks, and more for any stops.

Private transfer vs train and bus

Direct trains run between Munich and Vienna, via Salzburg and Linz. Long-distance coach journeys operate on the route too; check the current timetable before travelling. A private transfer goes from your door in Munich, or the airport, to your address in Vienna, with your luggage in the car and stops where you choose them.

Border and documents

Germany and Austria are both in the Schengen area, so the crossing — at Braunau am Inn on the usual line, or at Walserberg near Salzburg on the A8 — is internal. Police checks or temporary border controls may occur. Every passenger should carry a valid passport or national ID card, and it is wise to allow some flexibility in journey time.

Pickup in Munich, arrival in Vienna

We collect you from hotels, apartments and addresses in Munich, from München Hauptbahnhof, or from Munich Airport (MUC). Address pickups include 15 minutes of free waiting. In Vienna we drop off at your hotel or address anywhere in the city, or at Vienna Airport (VIE), about 429 km from central Munich and roughly 4h 40m of driving — give us your flight time so we can plan the departure from Munich around it.

Ways to break the drive

  • Melk Abbey — Benedictine abbey beside the A1, about 8 min extra driving
  • Linz — into the centre of the Upper Austrian capital, about 25 min extra driving
  • Chiemsee — the lake shore at Prien, about 28 min extra driving; the route then runs via Salzburg
  • Salzburg — the old town, about 30 min extra driving on the A8 line via Salzburg
💡 Tip: Want to see Salzburg on the way? Ask for the A8 line via Salzburg instead of the route through Braunau. It adds about 30 minutes of driving before your visit time, and the Chiemsee at Prien fits on the same line — tell us how long you would like at each and we build it into the quote and the arrival estimate for Vienna.
