From the Venetian lagoon to the Croatian capital in about four and a quarter hours. East along the A4 towards Trieste, across Slovenia past Postojna and round Ljubljana, then into Croatia — from Piazzale Roma, a Mestre hotel, Marco Polo Airport or your cruise berth to your door in Zagreb.
Drive from Venice to Zagreb in about 4h 15m. Private transfer priced on request per vehicle — tell us where we meet you (Piazzale Roma, Tronchetto, a Mestre address, Marco Polo Airport or the cruise berth) and whether you would like to break the drive at Postojna Cave or in Ljubljana.
No car can drive into the historic centre, so we meet you where the road ends: at Piazzale Roma, or at Tronchetto, linked to it by the People Mover. Hotels and addresses in Mestre on the mainland are collected at the door. From the Ponte della Libertà the route rounds Mestre on the A57 and heads east on the A4 towards Trieste.
The first of two Schengen-internal crossings, onto the Slovenian A3 beyond Trieste. Police checks or temporary border controls may occur, so every passenger keeps a passport or national ID card at hand.
The cave is beside the A1 motorway, a natural first break once you are in Slovenia. Add time for the cave tour itself.
The motorway rings the Slovenian capital, so a lunch stop in the centre costs about 16 minutes of extra driving plus the time you spend there.
The second Schengen-internal crossing, from the Slovenian A2 onto the Croatian A3. Checks may occur here too; allow some flexibility in journey time.
The Croatian A3 brings you the last stretch into the capital. Drop-off at your hotel or address in Zagreb, or at Zagreb Airport (ZAG), about 14 km from the centre, if you are flying on.
Per vehicle, not per person. Every quote includes tolls, fuel, the cross-border route, assistance with loading and unloading luggage, and child seats available on request.

Cross-border route handled. Passengers remain responsible for their own passports, visas and other travel documents.

Venice Marco Polo Airport (VCE) is about 15 km from Piazzale Roma on the mainland side of the lagoon. Driving straight from the airport to Zagreb is about 367 km and roughly 4 hours, so there is no need to go to the lagoon first — mention the airport pickup and your flight number in your request. Airport pickups include 60 minutes of free waiting.
From Zagreb we also drive to Plitvice Lakes, to Budapest and to Vienna.
Heading to the lagoon instead? Zagreb to Venice has its own page, with drop-offs at Piazzale Roma, Mestre, the airport or your ship.
Zagreb → Venice →Venice to Zagreb is about 378 km by road and passes through three countries, because Italy and Croatia share no land border. From Piazzale Roma the route crosses to the mainland, follows the A4 east past Trieste to the Slovenian border. In Slovenia the A3 and A1 run past Postojna to the Ljubljana ring, and the A2 continues east to the Croatian border, where the A3 motorway takes you into Zagreb. Allow about four and a quarter hours without stops.
There is no direct train from Venice to Zagreb: rail journeys change at Ljubljana and also at Trieste or Villach, so check the current timetable before travelling. Direct coaches operate — FlixBus runs from Venice stops including Mestre station, Tronchetto and Piazzale Roma to Zagreb bus station. A private transfer is the no-change option: collection at the edge of the lagoon, at Marco Polo Airport or at your cruise berth, your luggage stays in the car, and you can stop at Postojna or in Ljubljana on the way.
Italy, Slovenia and Croatia are all in the Schengen area, so both crossings are Schengen-internal. Police checks or temporary border controls may occur at either one. Every passenger should keep a valid passport or national ID card within reach, and journey times can vary with traffic and checks.
Venice’s historic centre is pedestrian-only, so a car cannot reach a hotel there; getting from a hotel in the centre to Piazzale Roma is your part of the trip. We meet you at Piazzale Roma or Tronchetto, at a hotel or address in Mestre, at Venice Marco Polo Airport (VCE) or at your cruise berth. In Zagreb we drop off at your hotel or address, or at Zagreb Airport (ZAG) if you are catching a flight.
