Getting from Venice to Slovenia and Croatia

Ljubljana is about 245 km from Venice by road, Rovinj in Istria about 265 km and Zagreb about 380 km. Split, on the central Dalmatian coast, is a long day of driving at about 640 km. Every one of these trips leaves Italy and crosses Slovenia.

There is no direct train from Venice to Ljubljana, Zagreb or Split, and no railway to Rovinj at all. A private transfer takes you from Piazzale Roma or your mainland hotel to your door on the other side, with the option of a stop on the way — Postojna Cave or the Škocjan Caves towards Ljubljana and Zagreb, or Piran on the way to Istria.

Venice Marco Polo Airport (VCE) is about 20 minutes from Piazzale Roma, Treviso Airport (TSF) about 40 minutes. If you land at either, we can collect you at arrivals and drive straight to your destination without going into Venice first.

Good to know

The historic centre: cars cannot enter it, so the road journey starts at Piazzale Roma, the last point a vehicle can reach, or at Tronchetto, linked to Piazzale Roma by the People Mover. Getting from a hotel in the centre to Piazzale Roma is your part of the trip; Mestre hotels are collected at the door.
Borders: Italy, Slovenia and Croatia are all in the Schengen area, but police checks or temporary border controls may occur. Every passenger should carry a valid passport or national ID card, and it is wise to allow some flexibility in journey time.
