Just off the A1

South-west of Ljubljana the A1 runs right past Postojna Cave, and the UNESCO-listed Škocjan Caves lie close to the motorway. Add time for the cave tour.

The second Schengen-internal crossing, into Italy. Checks may occur here as well, so allow some flexibility if you have a flight or a ship to catch in Venice.

Zagreb to Venice — what to expect

Zagreb to Venice is about 378 km and always runs through Slovenia, since Croatia and Italy have no land border between them. The Croatian A3 takes you west to the Slovenian border, the Slovenian A2 leads to the Ljubljana ring, and the A1 and A3 continue through the Karst to the Italian border. From there the A4 crosses the plain to Mestre and the causeway to Piazzale Roma. Allow about four and a quarter hours without stops.

Private transfer vs train and bus

The coach is the budget way to make this trip: direct coaches operate from Zagreb bus station to Venice, with FlixBus stopping at Mestre station, Tronchetto and Piazzale Roma. There is no direct train — rail journeys change at Ljubljana and then at Trieste or Villach. Check the current timetable before travelling either way. A private transfer leaves from your own door or Zagreb Airport at the hour you choose, needs no changes with luggage, and can drop you at Marco Polo Airport or your cruise berth rather than a bus stop.

Two borders and documents

Croatia, Slovenia and Italy are all in the Schengen area, so both crossings are Schengen-internal, but police checks or temporary border controls may occur at either. Every passenger should keep a valid passport or national ID card within reach; journey times can vary with traffic and checks.

Arriving in Venice

Cars cannot enter Venice’s historic centre, so the road journey ends at Piazzale Roma or at Tronchetto, which the People Mover links to Piazzale Roma in about three minutes. From there to a hotel in the centre is your part of the trip. Hotels and addresses in Mestre on the mainland get a door drop-off, and we also drive to Venice Marco Polo Airport (VCE) and to the cruise berths.

Stops worth adding

  • Ljubljana — the Slovenian capital, a short detour from the motorway ring
  • Postojna Cave — directly beside the A1; add time for the tour
  • Škocjan Caves — UNESCO-listed underground canyon in the Slovenian Karst
  • Miramare Castle — on the coast near Trieste, a last break before the A4 to Venice
💡 Tip: Boarding a cruise in Venice? The berth depends on the ship — Marittima, San Basilio, Fusina, Porto Marghera or Chioggia. Tell us the ship and your check-in time, and we plan the departure from Zagreb with room for traffic and two border crossings.
