Travelling the other way? Budapest to Zagreb takes the M7 back past Lake Balaton.

Budapest → Zagreb →

Zagreb to Budapest — what to expect

Zagreb to Budapest is about 345 km, almost all of it on motorway. The A4 runs north-east from Zagreb past Varaždin to the Hungarian border at Goričan/Letenye; from there the M7 passes Nagykanizsa, follows the south shore of Lake Balaton past Siófok and continues via Székesfehérvár into Budapest. Allow about three hours and three-quarters without stops. Croatian motorway tolls and the Hungarian e-vignette are our responsibility, not the passengers'.

Private transfer vs train and bus

A direct train runs between Zagreb and Budapest, but direct services are limited and the journey takes around six hours — longer than the drive. FlixBus runs direct coaches from Zagreb to Budapest's Népliget bus station. A private transfer is the door-to-door option: from your Zagreb hotel or the airport to your address in Budapest, with luggage in the car and a break at Lake Balaton if you want one.

Border and documents

Croatia and Hungary are both in the Schengen area and the Goričan/Letenye crossing is an internal border. Police checks may still occur, so every passenger should carry a passport or national ID card; journey times can vary with traffic and checks.

Arriving in Budapest

We drop off at hotels and addresses anywhere in Budapest, Buda or Pest. If you are flying on, we can take you straight to Budapest Airport (BUD), about 375 km and roughly 4h 05m from Zagreb in total.

Stops worth adding

  • Siófok — on the south shore of Lake Balaton, beside the M7, about 5 min extra driving
  • Nagykanizsa — a Hungarian town just off the M7 after the border, about 8 min extra driving
  • Varaždin — baroque old town off the A4 before the border, about 23 min extra driving
💡 Tip: Flying out of Budapest the same day? Give us your flight time when you request the transfer. Budapest Airport is about 30 km beyond the city centre, so we plan the Zagreb departure with room for traffic and a stop.
