Getting around from Zagreb

Zagreb is Croatia’s capital and its main transport hub — sitting at the junction of the A1 motorway (south to the Dalmatian coast), A3 (east to Belgrade), A2 (north to Slovenia), and A4 (northeast to Hungary). Most Balkan road journeys either start, end, or pass through Zagreb.

For short trips, the most popular routes are Plitvice Lakes (2 hours, Croatia’s most visited national park) and Ljubljana (under 2 hours, Slovenia’s compact capital). For longer Balkan trips, Zagreb is the logical northern anchor — drives to Belgrade (4 hours), Sarajevo (5 hours via motorway), or down the coast to Zadar, Split, and Dubrovnik.

Private transfer is often faster and more flexible than the alternatives. Buses to Plitvice run 4–5 times daily with limited luggage and no scenic stops. The train to Ljubljana takes 2.5 hours; to Split it takes 6+ hours and only runs seasonally. For door-to-door comfort and scenic flexibility, private transfers are the go-to.

Seasonal tips

Jun–Aug: Peak season on the A1 motorway south — Zagreb to coast can see 6–8 hour drives on summer Saturdays due to tunnel traffic. Book morning departures.
Apr–May, Sep–Oct: Best Plitvice weather. Lakes are fuller in spring, autumn colours in October. Lighter motorway traffic.
Nov–Mar: Winter season. Mountain motorway sections (Tunel Sveti Rok on A1) can close briefly in snow. Our drivers use winter tyres.
Advent in Zagreb: Late Nov–early Jan the city centre hosts Europe’s most-awarded Christmas market. Expect busy airport transfers.
