Trieste to Zagreb by private car in about two hours forty. Up onto the Karst plateau above the Gulf of Trieste, across Slovenia past Postojna and round Ljubljana, then east into Croatia — from your Trieste hotel, the cruise terminal or Trieste Airport to your door in the Croatian capital.
Drive from Trieste to Zagreb in about 2h 40m. Private transfer priced on request per vehicle, door-to-door — tell us where we collect you in Trieste (hotel, Stazione Marittima or Trieste Airport) and whether you would like to break the drive at Postojna Cave, the Škocjan Caves or in Ljubljana.
Pickup from your hotel or address in Trieste, at the Stazione Marittima cruise terminal on Molo dei Bersaglieri, or at Trieste Airport (TRS). The road climbs out of the city by Opicina onto the Karst towards Slovenia.
The first of two Schengen-internal crossings, on the edge of the Karst. Police checks or temporary border controls may occur, so every passenger keeps a passport or national ID card at hand.
Just inside Slovenia the UNESCO-listed Škocjan Caves lie close to the motorway, and the Karst village of Lipica is a short drive off it. Add time for your visit.
Postojna Cave sits beside the A1 motorway, so it is the easiest cave stop on this route. Add time for the cave tour.
The motorway rings the Slovenian capital; a detour into the centre gives you lunch or a walk in the old town before the last stretch east.
The second Schengen-internal crossing, from the Slovenian A2 onto the Croatian A3. Police checks or temporary border controls may occur here too; allow some flexibility in journey time.
The Croatian A3 runs straight into Zagreb: drop-off at your hotel or address in the city, or at Zagreb Airport (ZAG), about 14 km from the centre, if you are flying on.
Per vehicle, not per person. Every quote includes tolls, fuel, the cross-border route, assistance with loading and unloading luggage, and child seats available on request.

Trieste Airport (TRS) is at Ronchi dei Legionari, about 40 km north-west of the city. From the airport straight to Zagreb is about 258 km and roughly 3h, so there is no need to go into Trieste first — mention the airport pickup and your flight number in your request. Airport pickups include 60 minutes of free waiting.
From Zagreb we also drive to Plitvice Lakes, to Budapest and to Vienna.
Travelling the other way? Zagreb to Trieste has its own page, with pickups in Zagreb or at Zagreb Airport.
Zagreb → Trieste →Trieste to Zagreb is about 229 km and always passes through Slovenia, because Italy and Croatia share no land border. From Trieste the road climbs by Opicina onto the Karst and into Slovenia, joins the A1 past Divača and Postojna, follows the southern ring of Ljubljana and then the A2 east to the Croatian border, where the A3 carries on to Zagreb. Allow about two hours forty without stops.
There is no direct train from Trieste to Zagreb: rail journeys go via Ljubljana and need a change at Villa Opicina as well, so check the current timetable before travelling. Direct coaches operate from Trieste bus station (Autostazione, Piazza della Libertà) to Zagreb bus station; check the current timetable before travelling. A private transfer starts at your hotel, the cruise terminal or Trieste Airport at the hour you choose, keeps your luggage with you all the way, and can stop at Postojna Cave or in Ljubljana.
You cross Italy–Slovenia and then Slovenia–Croatia. All three countries are in the Schengen area, so both crossings are Schengen-internal, but police checks or temporary border controls may occur at either. Every passenger should keep a valid passport or national ID card within reach; journey times can vary with traffic and checks.
We collect from hotels and addresses in Trieste, from the Stazione Marittima cruise terminal on the waterfront (Molo IV is also used by ships) and from Trieste Airport (TRS) at Ronchi dei Legionari.
