Prague to Vienna — what to expect

By road, Prague to Vienna is about 340 km. The D1 motorway carries you south-east out of Prague, by Jihlava and down to Brno. From Brno road 52 runs south via Pohořelice to Mikulov and the Austrian border at Drasenhofen, and in Austria the A5 Nord crosses the Weinviertel before the S1 and A23 lead into Vienna. A shorter road via Znojmo also exists, mostly away from the motorway; the driver chooses on the day. Allow about 3h 50m of driving without breaks.

Private transfer vs train and bus

Direct trains run between Prague and Vienna, from Praha hlavní nádraží to Wien Hauptbahnhof, and long-distance coach journeys operate from Prague as well; check the current timetable before travelling. The train ties you to a station and a departure time. A private transfer collects you at your Prague hotel when you are ready, carries the luggage, can stop in Brno or Mikulov, and drops you at the door of your Vienna address.

One border and documents

The Czech Republic and Austria are both Schengen members, so the crossing near Mikulov is internal. Police checks or temporary border controls may occur. Every passenger should carry a valid passport or national ID card, and it is wise to allow some flexibility in journey time.

Pickup in Prague, arrival in Vienna

We collect you from hotels, apartments and addresses in Prague, from Praha hlavní nádraží or the Florenc coach station, or from Václav Havel Airport Prague (PRG). Address pickups include 15 minutes of free waiting. In Vienna we drop off at your hotel or address, at Wien Hauptbahnhof, or at Vienna Airport (VIE), about 348 km from Prague and roughly 4 hours of driving — give us your flight time so we can plan the departure from Prague around it.

Ways to break the drive

  • Brno — the Czech Republic’s second city, at the end of the D1 and roughly halfway
  • Mikulov — the town on the road just before the Austrian border
💡 Tip: Flying out of Vienna rather than staying? We can drop you at Vienna Airport (VIE) instead of the city — from Prague it is about 348 km and roughly 4 hours of driving. Give us your flight time and we plan the departure from Prague around it.
