From the Slovenian capital down to the Adriatic in about an hour and a quarter. South-west on the A1 past Postojna, over the Karst into Italy and down the hill into Trieste — to your hotel, a cruise departure at the Stazione Marittima or Trieste Airport.
Drive from Ljubljana to Trieste in about 1h 15m. Private transfer priced on request per vehicle, door-to-door — to a Trieste hotel, the cruise terminal or Trieste Airport, with an optional stop in the Karst on the way.
Pickup from your hotel or address. The old town is a pedestrian zone, so for hotels inside it we meet you at the nearest point open to cars. South-west onto the A1 motorway.
The A1 passes right by Postojna Cave, and the UNESCO-listed Škocjan Caves lie just off the motorway closer to the border. Either makes a good break on the way to the coast.
A Schengen-internal crossing into Italy. Police checks or temporary border controls may occur, so keep a passport or national ID card at hand and allow some flexibility in journey time.
Down from Opicina into the city: drop-off at your hotel or address, at the Stazione Marittima on Molo dei Bersaglieri for cruise departures, or at Trieste Airport (TRS) at Ronchi dei Legionari.
Per vehicle, not per person. Every quote includes tolls, fuel, the cross-border route, assistance with loading and unloading luggage, and child seats available on request.

Ljubljana Airport (LJU) at Brnik is about 28 km north of the city. From the airport straight to Trieste is about 116 km and 1h 25m, so you can skip the city if you are heading for the coast — mention the airport pickup in your request. Airport pickups include 60 minutes of free waiting.
Trieste is the gateway to Istria: we also drive from Trieste south to Rovinj on the Croatian coast.
Travelling the other way? Trieste to Ljubljana brings you back up over the Karst.
Trieste → Ljubljana →Ljubljana to Trieste is one of the shortest international drives from the Slovenian capital: about 95 km. The A1 motorway runs south-west through the Karst past Postojna, the A3 continues to the Italian border at Fernetiči/Fernetti, and the last stretch drops from the Opicina plateau down into Trieste and the sea. Allow about an hour and a quarter without stops.
Rail connections between the two cities are limited and not direct: you change at Villa Opicina, and the whole journey takes around three hours. FlixBus runs direct coaches from Ljubljana bus station to Trieste bus station. A private transfer goes from your door to your hotel, the cruise terminal or the airport, and lets you break the journey at Postojna or Škocjan.
Slovenia and Italy are both in the Schengen area, so this is an internal border, but police checks or temporary border controls may occur when you cross. Every passenger should keep a passport or national ID card within reach; allow some flexibility if you have a ship or flight to catch.
We drop off at hotels and addresses in the city, at the Stazione Marittima for cruise departures and at Trieste Airport (TRS), about 40 minutes from the centre at Ronchi dei Legionari.
