Butrint
The most complete ancient city in Albania, just 30 minutes south — a UNESCO-listed ruin layered through Greek, Roman, Byzantine and Venetian times, all on one walking loop in a wooded national park beside a lagoon. A Greek theatre, baptistery mosaics, a basilica, city walls and a Venetian castle on the hill.
Duration: 4–5 hours (half day) | Drive: ~30 min each way Highlights: Greek theatre, baptistery mosaics, Venetian castle, lagoon setting
Ksamil
Just 4 km north of Butrint and 17 km south of Sarandë, Ksamil is the postcard of the Albanian Riviera — white sand, shallow turquoise water and a scatter of tiny islands you can swim or wade out to. The classic pairing is Butrint in the cooler morning and Ksamil’s beaches in the afternoon.
Duration: Half day to full day | Drive: ~20 min each way Highlights: White-sand beaches, swim-to islands, turquoise shallows
The Blue Eye (Syri i Kaltër)
A short detour inland toward Gjirokastra, the Blue Eye is a natural spring of astonishing clarity — water welling up a deep blue from an underwater cave, ringed by forest. A quick, memorable stop, easily added to a Butrint or Ksamil day.
Duration: 1–2 hours as a stop | Drive: ~30 min each way Highlights: Deep-blue spring, forest setting, boardwalk viewpoint
