Ksamil: Albania's Turquoise Riviera Beaches

White sand, water the colour of a swimming pool, and a scatter of tiny islands you can swim out to — the beach that put the Albanian Riviera on the map, at the country's southern tip.

Quick answer

Ksamil is a small resort village at the southern tip of the Albanian Riviera, about 17 km south of Sarandë, known for white-sand beaches, shallow turquoise water, and four little islands just offshore that you can swim or wade to. It sits inside the Butrint National Park area, 4 km north of the Butrint ruins, and about 270 km (4.5 hours) from Tirana. There is no airport or train nearby, so you arrive by road from Sarandë or Tirana, or by ferry from Corfu to Sarandë and then the short hop south. July and August are very busy; June and September are the sweet spot for warm sea and thinner crowds.

At the very bottom of Albania, where the Riviera runs out of coast and Corfu sits just across the channel, Ksamil is the beach that made the country a summer destination. White sand, water so clear and pale it looks tropical, and — the signature — a handful of tiny islands a short swim offshore, close enough to wade to when the sea is calm.

What to expect

Ksamil is small: a cluster of beaches and bays wrapped around the village, most of them lined with beach clubs renting sunbeds and umbrellas in season. The four little islands just off the shore are the draw — people swim, paddle or wade out to them and picnic on the rocks. The water is shallow and warm, which makes it good for families, and the whole place has an easy, low-key holiday feel outside the peak weeks.

It’s a beach destination first, so it pairs naturally with the sights nearby rather than filling a whole trip on its own.

When to go

June and September are the sweet spot — the sea is warm enough to swim, the light is long, and the crowds are a fraction of the July–August peak, when the small beaches fill early and the single coastal road into the village can back up. Outside roughly May–October many beach clubs wind down and Ksamil goes quiet.

Getting there

There’s no airport and no train near Ksamil — everything arrives by road. It’s about 17 km south of Sarandë (20–30 minutes) and roughly 270 km from Tirana (around 4.5 hours over the Llogara Pass or inland via Gjirokastra). A popular alternative is the Corfu–Sarandë passenger ferry, then the short hop down to Ksamil. Because the drive from the north is long and scenic, most visitors come by private transfer and break the journey at the Llogara Pass viewpoint or the Blue Eye spring.

Bottom line

Ksamil is the postcard of the Albanian Riviera — turquoise shallows and swim-to islands at the southern tip of the country. Come in June or September if you can, arrive by road from Sarandë or on the long, spectacular drive down from Tirana, and give yourself an easy half-day pairing the beaches with Butrint just down the road.
