An hour up the Danube to Serbia’s laid-back second city — baroque Novi Sad, with its café-lined Freedom Square, the neo-Gothic cathedral and the leafy river quay. Across the water rises the great Petrovaradin Fortress, the “Gibraltar of the Danube”, with ramparts, tunnels and its famous upside-down clock.

Fruška Gora
South of Novi Sad, Fruška Gora is a low range of wooded hills rising from the Pannonian plain — a national park scattered with medieval Orthodox monasteries among the forests and vineyards. Quiet, green and historic, it’s an easy add-on to a Novi Sad day for anyone who wants a taste of the Vojvodina countryside.

Sremski Karlovci
At the foot of Fruška Gora, a few minutes from Novi Sad, Sremski Karlovci is a small, picture-perfect baroque town — the historic seat of the Serbian church, with a grand cathedral, a theological seminary and a handsome main square. A short, pretty stop to round out a day in the north.
