The city’s easiest escape — a steep river gorge just 30 minutes south-west of Skopje, dammed into an emerald lake and ringed by cliffs and clifftop monasteries. Kayak on the water, walk the shoreline path, or take a boat to the Vrelo cave, one of the deepest underwater caves in the region. A rewarding half-day.

Lake Ohrid
North Macedonia’s grand trip south — a town and lake together UNESCO-listed for both nature and culture, on one of the oldest and deepest lakes in Europe. The iconic Church of St John at Kaneo above the water, Samuel’s Fortress over the old town, and the Monastery of St Naum at the southern shore. It’s a long day; many prefer to stay overnight.
