Instead of the motorway, the B9 runs from Petržalka along the Danube through Hainburg and past the Roman site of Carnuntum at Petronell. It is a slower road; tell us if you want to see either.

Bratislava to Vienna — what to expect

Bratislava to Vienna is about 80 km by motorway. From the city the route crosses the Danube on the Most SNP bridge, follows the D1 and D2 and then the D4 to the border at Jarovce/Kittsee. In Austria the A6 Nordost Autobahn joins the A4 Ost Autobahn near Parndorf, and the A4 runs past Vienna Airport at Schwechat into the city. Allow about an hour of driving without stops; the morning and evening traffic into Vienna can add to it.

Private transfer vs train and bus

Direct trains run between Bratislava and Vienna, and coach journeys operate between the two cities; check the current timetable before travelling. In season a fast boat also runs on the Danube to Vienna — check the current boat timetable. A private transfer is the door-to-door choice: no station at either end, luggage in the car, and a direct run to the Vienna Airport terminal if you are flying.

Border and documents

Slovakia and Austria are both in the Schengen area, so the crossing is an internal border. Police checks or temporary border controls may occur there. Every passenger should carry a valid passport or national ID card, and before a flight it is wise to allow some flexibility in journey time.

Pickup in Bratislava, arrival in Vienna

We collect you from hotels, apartments and addresses in Bratislava, or from Bratislava Airport (BTS). Address pickups include 15 minutes of free waiting. In Vienna we drop off at Vienna Airport (VIE) or at your hotel or address anywhere in the city.

Possible stops

  • Designer Outlet Parndorf — at the junction of the A6 and the A4
  • Hainburg an der Donau — on the B9 Danube road
  • Carnuntum — the Roman site at Petronell, also on the B9
💡 Tip: Flying from Vienna? Bratislava to Vienna Airport is about 65 km and roughly 50 minutes of driving, shorter than the trip into Vienna itself. Send us your flight time and we set the pickup in Bratislava with a margin for traffic and possible border checks.
