Leave Sofia in the morning and arrive in Istanbul by car, with your luggage beside you the whole way. Down the Trakia motorway past Plovdiv, through the Maritsa valley to the Turkish border at Kapitan Andreevo, then across Thrace to your hotel, the cruise terminal or either Istanbul airport.
Sofia to Istanbul by private car: about 549 km and roughly 5h 35m of driving before border time and Istanbul traffic are added. Priced on request per vehicle, from your Sofia address to the door of your Istanbul hotel — and a break in Plovdiv or Edirne can be planned on request.
We collect you from your hotel or address in Sofia, from Sofia Central railway station or from Sofia Airport (SOF) east of the city. Tsarigradsko shose leads out to the A1 Trakia motorway heading south-east.
The A1 passes Pazardzhik and then Plovdiv, whose Old Town and Roman theatre sit just off the motorway. A good place for a first break; tell us if you want it.
The A4 Maritsa motorway follows the valley past Haskovo to Svilengrad, known for its Old Bridge, shortly before the crossing.
You leave the EU and the Schengen area here. Full passport and customs control takes place on both sides for every passenger, and the time it takes varies.
The first Turkish city after the border, home to the Selimiye Mosque, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. From here the O-3 motorway runs east across Thrace towards Istanbul.
The O-3 brings you in past Lüleburgaz, Silivri and Büyükçekmece. Istanbul traffic can add a lot of time to this last part, which we allow for when planning the day. Drop-off at your hotel in Sultanahmet, Karaköy, Taksim, Şişli or elsewhere, at the Galataport cruise terminal, or at Istanbul Airport (IST) or Sabiha Gökçen (SAW).
Per vehicle, not per person. Every quote includes tolls, fuel, the cross-border route, assistance with loading and unloading luggage, and child seats available on request.

A direct overnight train runs from Sofia to Istanbul’s Halkalı station, calling at Plovdiv; Halkalı is on the western edge of the city, so you still need to cross Istanbul to most hotels. Direct coaches also operate between the two cities. Check the current timetable before travelling. A private transfer takes you from your Sofia address to your Istanbul hotel or airport in one vehicle, with a break where you want it.
Bulgaria is in the EU and the Schengen area; Turkey is in neither, so this is an external border of the EU. Every passenger goes through full passport and customs control on both sides and needs a valid passport. Turkey’s visa and entry requirements depend on nationality — check them before travelling. Waiting time at the border varies, so allow some flexibility.
The drive time is a free-flow figure, and Istanbul traffic can add a lot of time to the final stretch into the city. We plan the pickup in Sofia with that in mind. Drop-off at hotels and addresses on either side of the Bosphorus, at the Galataport cruise terminal in Karaköy, at the Grand Istanbul Bus Terminal, or at Istanbul Airport (IST) or Sabiha Gökçen (SAW).
Pickup from hotels and addresses anywhere in Sofia, with 15 minutes of free waiting, from the central railway station, or from Sofia Airport (SOF) with 60 minutes. Child seats are free on request.
