From the Bosphorus to the Bulgarian capital in one car. West across Thrace on the O-3 motorway, over the border at Kapıkule and up the Maritsa valley past Plovdiv — picked up at your Istanbul hotel, address, cruise terminal or airport and driven to your door in Sofia.
Istanbul to Sofia is about 549 km by road, roughly 5h 35m of driving without traffic, border waiting or breaks. Private transfer priced on request per vehicle, door to door — with the option of breaking the long day in Edirne or Plovdiv.
Pickup from hotels in Sultanahmet, Karaköy, Taksim, Şişli or anywhere else in the city, from the Galataport cruise terminal in Karaköy, or from Istanbul Airport (IST) or Sabiha Gökçen (SAW). Istanbul traffic can add a lot of time to getting out of the city, so we plan the pickup around it.
The O-3 runs west past Silivri and Lüleburgaz to Edirne, the last Turkish city before the border. The Selimiye Mosque, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a short detour off the route; add the time you spend there.
An external border of the EU and the Schengen area. Every passenger goes through full passport and customs control on both sides, so keep passports at hand. Waiting time varies.
The first Bulgarian town after the border, where the A4 Maritsa motorway begins. Its Old Bridge, also known as the Mustafa Pasha Bridge, is a short detour.
The A4 joins the A1 Trakia motorway, which passes Plovdiv. Leaving it for the Roman theatre on the edge of the Old Town is the natural place to stretch the legs on this long drive; add the time you spend there.
The A1 and Tsarigradsko shose bring you into the capital from the south-east. Drop-off at your hotel or address, at Sofia Central railway station, or at Sofia Airport (SOF) if you are flying on.
Per vehicle, not per person. Every quote includes tolls, fuel, the cross-border route, assistance with loading and unloading luggage, and child seats available on request.

We can collect you at either Istanbul airport and set off for Sofia from arrivals: Istanbul Airport (IST) on the European side north of the city, or Sabiha Gökçen (SAW) on the Asian side, which means crossing the Bosphorus first. Mention the airport and your flight number in your request. Airport pickups include 60 minutes of free waiting.
If Plovdiv is your destination, see Istanbul to Plovdiv. From Sofia we also drive south to Thessaloniki in Greece.
Heading the other way? Sofia to Istanbul covers the drive into Turkey and to the Istanbul airports.
Sofia → Istanbul →The road from Istanbul to Sofia is about 549 km. The O-3 motorway carries you west out of the city past Büyükçekmece, Silivri and Lüleburgaz to Edirne, where the D-100 leads to the Kapıkule border crossing. In Bulgaria the A4 Maritsa motorway runs up the valley past Svilengrad and Haskovo to join the A1 Trakia, which passes Plovdiv and Pazardzhik on the way to Sofia. Without traffic, border waiting or breaks that is roughly 5h 35m of driving; leaving Istanbul and the time at the border can add a good deal to it.
A direct overnight train runs between Istanbul’s Halkalı station and Sofia, calling at Plovdiv. Halkalı is a suburban station on the western side of Istanbul, not Sirkeci in the old city. Direct coaches also operate from the Grand Istanbul Bus Terminal. Check the current timetable before travelling. A private transfer starts at your hotel, keeps your luggage with you across the border and lets you stop in Edirne or Plovdiv on the way.
Turkey is outside both the EU and the Schengen area, so Kapıkule / Kapitan Andreevo is an external border of the EU. Every passenger goes through full passport and customs control on both sides and must carry a valid passport. Visa and entry requirements depend on nationality — check them before travelling. Waiting time at the border varies, so allow some flexibility in the day.
The drive time above is a free-flow figure. Istanbul traffic can add a lot of time to the first part of the journey, so the quote plans the pickup around it rather than around the clock alone. Tell us when you would like to be in Sofia and we suggest a pickup time.
We collect from hotels and addresses on either side of Istanbul, from the Galataport cruise terminal in Karaköy, from the Grand Istanbul Bus Terminal, or from Istanbul Airport (IST) or Sabiha Gökçen (SAW). Child seats are free on request.
