Traveling the other way? Podgorica to Budva is the same route in reverse.
Book Podgorica → Budva →Budva to Podgorica is sixty kilometres and roughly an hour and twenty minutes. The route goes south along the Riviera to Sutomore, then inland through the Sozina tunnel, which is the reason this drive is as quick as it is — before it opened, the same journey meant a long climb over the coastal range.
The first stretch is the best-known part of the Montenegrin coast: Bečići, Sveti Stefan, Petrovac. Sveti Stefan is six kilometres out of Budva and the pull-in above it is a free stop on the way past. Past Petrovac the road leaves the sea for good.
The Sozina tunnel runs about four kilometres under the mountains and carries a toll, which is included in your fare. It comes out near Virpazar at the northern end of Skadar Lake, the largest lake in the Balkans and a national park — the road then follows its edge before opening onto the Zeta plain.
Skadar Lake is the obvious addition to this transfer. Virpazar, right by the tunnel exit, is where the boat trips leave from, and an hour or two there fits neatly into the drive. Tell us at booking rather than on the day so the timing works.
Podgorica is the administrative capital; most guests on this route are heading for the airport, a meeting or an onward connection. Podgorica Airport (TGD) is twelve kilometres south of the centre.
