Podgorica to Tirana is the shortest capital-to-capital transfer in the Balkans — 159 km, 2h 30m direct, one border crossing at Hani i Hotit on the southern shore of Lake Skadar. The route skirts Lake Skadar National Park — the largest lake in the Balkans (44 km long), shared between Montenegro and Albania, and one of Europe’s most important bird reserves (Dalmatian pelicans, pygmy cormorants, over 270 species recorded).
Virpazar (40 km south-east of Podgorica) on the Montenegrin side of Lake Skadar offers boat trips into the bird reserve. Shkodër is the essential Albanian-side stop — Rozafa Castle on the limestone spur above the Drin-Bojana-Kir confluence, the Marubi National Photography Museum, and the restored Ebu Beker Mosque.
Drop-off at your address or Tirana International Airport (TIA/Rinas). Must-see: Skanderbeg Square, Et’hem Bey Mosque, Bunk’Art 1 and 2, Blloku, Dajti cable car. Currency: Albanian Lek (ALL); euros accepted in tourist zones.
