Kotor to
Podgorica transfer

Seventy-two kilometres from the bay to the capital, climbing the Lovćen serpentine above Kotor and running through Cetinje, the old royal seat. About an hour and a half, and the view back down over Boka on the way up is the reason to take this road rather than the coast.

The Kotor serpentine

8 km from Kotor ~20 min

The old Austro-Hungarian road up to the Lovćen plateau, switchback after switchback, with the whole bay laid out below. There is a pull-in near the top that is the classic view of Kotor from above.

★

Cetinje

45 km from Kotor ~1h

The old royal capital on a high karst plain — the palace of King Nikola, the monastery and a street of former embassies from when this was the seat of the Montenegrin state. The Njegoš mausoleum on Mount Lovćen is a detour from here.

About the Kotor to Podgorica transfer

Kotor to Podgorica is seventy-two kilometres and about ninety minutes, from sea level at the head of the bay to the capital on the Zeta plain. The road goes up and over rather than around: it climbs the Lovćen massif behind Kotor, crosses the karst plateau through Cetinje, and then drops into Podgorica.

The climb out of Kotor is the memorable part. The old road stacks hairpin on hairpin up the mountainside, and near the top there is a pull-in with the whole of Boka Kotorska below — the walled town, the bay, and the Verige narrows in the distance. It is a slow section by design; the driver takes it at a pace that suits the road.

Cetinje sits on a high plain about two thirds of the way. It was the capital of Montenegro until 1918 and still has the royal palace, the monastery holding the relic of St John the Baptist, and a row of buildings that were foreign embassies when this town ran the country. From Cetinje a side road climbs Mount Lovćen to the Njegoš mausoleum, which is worth the detour on a clear day.

Podgorica is the administrative capital rather than the tourist one — most guests are passing through to the airport, to a meeting, or onward to Skadar Lake, which begins about fifteen kilometres south. Podgorica Airport (TGD) is twelve kilometres from the centre and is the usual end point of this transfer.

In winter the Lovćen road can hold snow and is occasionally closed. When it is, the coastal alternative through Budva and the Sozina tunnel adds roughly half an hour. We check conditions the morning of the transfer and tell you which way we are going.

Route FAQ

Kotor to Podgorica questions

Everything specific to this route.

How long does the drive take?

+

About an hour and a half for 72 km. The mountain section is slow by nature, so the average speed is lower than the distance suggests.

Can we stop at the Njegos mausoleum?

+

Yes. It is a detour from Cetinje up Mount Lovćen, and there is a climb of a few hundred steps at the top. Tell us at booking so the time is planned in.

What happens in winter?

+

The Lovćen road can hold snow and is sometimes closed. We then take the coastal road through Budva and the Sozina tunnel, which adds roughly 30 minutes. We tell you on the morning.

Do you drop at Podgorica Airport?

+

Yes. TGD is 12 km south of the centre and is a standard drop-off on this route.

Is this route suitable if I get carsick?

+

The Kotor serpentine is a long sequence of hairpins. If that is a problem, say so at booking and we will take the coastal road through the Sozina tunnel instead.
