About the Trip

Mostar to Počitelj — what the day looks like

Počitelj is a medieval Ottoman fortress village 30 km south of Mostar on the road to the Croatian coast. Stone houses climb a steep limestone cliff beneath a 16th-century clock tower and the 1471 fortress, with pomegranate trees growing between the ruined walls and the Neretva river bending below. The village has been continuously inhabited since the 14th century and is on UNESCO's tentative World Heritage List. From Mostar it's a 25-minute drive south on the M17 highway.

Most of our guests do this as a short half-day round trip from Mostar — about 2.5 to 3 hours total. That covers pickup, the drive each way, and 60–90 minutes at Počitelj (enough for the village walk, the clock tower climb, the mosque, and a coffee). If you want a fuller day, we can add Kravica Waterfalls (25 minutes from Počitelj) or Blagaj Tekija (returning via the local road) for a 5–6 hour southern Herzegovina day.

For everything about Počitelj itself — history, what to see, climbing the tower, the mosque, the pomegranate festival — see our detailed Počitelj visitor guide. This page covers the transfer logistics: route, pricing, alternatives, and how to plan the day from Mostar.

What's included in the day trip

  • Door-to-door pickup from your Mostar hotel or Airbnb
  • English-speaking local driver
  • Air-conditioned vehicle with bottled water
  • No border crossings (Mostar and Počitelj are both in BiH)
  • Driver waits at Počitelj while you visit (typical 90 minutes)
  • Optional Kravica or Blagaj add-on (low extra cost)
  • Return drive to your Mostar accommodation
💡 Insider tip: Visit in late afternoon (4–6pm) for the best light on the village face — the limestone glows gold in the western sun. Or come in October for the annual Festival of Pomegranates.
The Route

What the drive looks like

The 30 km route runs south from Mostar on the M17 highway through Buna and Čapljina towards the Croatian border. The road is paved throughout and well-maintained, with the Neretva river running parallel for most of the drive. There are no border crossings — both Mostar and Počitelj are in Bosnia & Herzegovina.

There's a small parking area at the foot of the village (free, fills in summer between 10am and 2pm). From there a stone-paved path leads up into the village. If you have mobility limitations, mention it when booking — the village paths are uneven and some sections are steep.

If you're combining with Kravica, the route changes: instead of returning the same way, we drive west from Počitelj through Ljubuški to Kravica (25 minutes), then back to Mostar via the M6. That adds about 30 km but lets you see two of southern Herzegovina's best stops in one day.

Half-day vs full-day options

All combinations are private transfers — per vehicle, not per person, driver waits at each stop. Tell us what you want to see when you book.

How Else You Could Do It
