Some castles command a hill; Predjama hides in a cliff. This pale Renaissance fortress is built straight into the mouth of a cave in a 123-metre rock face, half masonry and half mountain — the largest cave castle in the world, and one of Slovenia’s most photographed sights. It sits a short drive from Postojna Cave, and the two are made to be visited together.
What you’ll see
From the road, the castle looks impossibly wedged into the cliff. Inside, a tour winds through rooms that blend built walls with bare rock — a chapel, living quarters, a dungeon, and windows that look straight down the valley. In season you can also tour the cave system behind and beneath the castle.
The legend
Predjama’s fame owes as much to its story as its setting. In the 15th century the robber-knight Erazem of Predjama defied a besieging army for months by using a secret tunnel through the cave behind the castle to smuggle in food — famously taunting his besiegers with fresh cherries — until a servant betrayed him.
Getting there & pairing
Predjama is about 9 km from Postojna Cave and 45 minutes from Ljubljana. It’s almost always visited together with the cave — combined tickets are sold — making a comfortable half-day.
When to go
The castle is open year-round; the cave behind it runs seasonally. Spring to autumn is best for the drive and the setting, with late afternoon light flattering the cliff. Summer is busiest — pair it with an early Postojna Cave slot to stay ahead of the coaches.
