Slovenia’s karst is riddled with caves, but Postojna is the one everyone comes for — not just for its size, but for how you see it: you don’t walk in, you ride an electric train deep underground before the chambers even begin. It’s one of Europe’s great show caves, and an easy trip from Ljubljana or a stop on the way to the coast.
The tour
The visit starts with the underground train — running here since the 19th century — which carries you a few kilometres into the mountain. From there a guided walk leads through vast, floodlit chambers of stalactites and stalagmites, past formations like the towering white “Brilliant” column, before the train brings you back out. The whole thing takes about 1.5 hours.
Look out for the olm (Proteus), the pale, blind cave salamander that locals long called the “human fish” — a few live in an aquarium at the cave.
Practical notes
The cave stays at about 10°C year-round, so bring a layer even in July. Tours run on a fixed schedule all year; book ahead in summer, when slots fill.
Getting there & pairing
Postojna is about 45 minutes from Ljubljana and roughly halfway to the coast. Its natural partner is Predjama Castle, 9 km away — combined tickets make a comfortable half-day.
When to go
Because the temperature never changes, Postojna is a genuinely year-round sight — even a good rainy-day or winter option, when it’s much quieter. Summer is peak: book your train slot ahead and expect crowds at midday.
