Split to Plitvice Lakes is Croatia’s classic nature transfer — 250 km from Diocletian’s Palace (UNESCO, 4th century AD) in the Roman capital of Dalmatia to Plitvice Lakes National Park (UNESCO since 1979) in the Lika interior. The park is Croatia’s most visited natural attraction (around 1.5M annual visitors) and protects 16 terraced lakes linked by 92 m of cascading tufa waterfalls over 259 km² of karst and beech-fir forest. Drive time is 3 hours direct on the A1 motorway with 10 km of secondary road at the end.
A1 motorway north from Split past Šibenik and Zadar exits, through the Sveti Rok tunnel (5.7 km, one of Croatia’s longest) into the Lika plateau. Exit 16 (Otočac) leads onto secondary roads for the final 30 km east to the park entrance at Entrance 1 (Northern, Veliki slap waterfall) or Entrance 2 (Southern, Kozjak Lake ferry landing).
The park is structured around three visitor routes: A (short, 2-3 hours, Lower Lakes only), B (medium, 3-4 hours, Lower + part Upper), C (full day, 6-8 hours, all 16 lakes). Must-see: Veliki slap (the Great Waterfall, 78 m drop, Croatia’s highest), Galovac cascades, Kozjak Lake ferry crossing, and the Upper Lakes boardwalks. Entry is time-slotted in summer; advance booking essential. The park is open year-round; winter transforms it into frozen-waterfall scenery but several boardwalks close.
Rastoke (20 km north of Plitvice near Slunj) is a village of wooden watermills built directly over the Slunjčica river cascades — often called “mini Plitvice” and worth a 30-minute photo stop. Krka National Park near Šibenik (1h 20m from Split, 1h 40m off the A1) is the other Croatian waterfall park; pairing Plitvice and Krka in one long day is possible but tight.
Public bus Split–Plitvice takes 4 hours and runs 2-3 times daily with rigid return schedules. Private car at 3 hours door-to-door gives you full-day park flexibility — arrive at opening, stay for sunset, and include a Rastoke stop on the return. For families or groups with limited Croatia time, the private option is materially better value than a group tour.
