Getting around from Skopje

Skopje is North Macedonia’s capital and a natural hub for travel through the southern Balkans. Within Macedonia, Matka Canyon is a short trip south-west of the city, while Lake Ohrid sits in the south-west corner of the country. Cross-border routes to Pristina (Kosovo), Tirana (Albania), Sofia (Bulgaria) and Belgrade (Serbia) all start from Skopje.

Public transport in this region is limited: buses are slow, trains barely cover cross-border routes, and rental cars often hit insurance restrictions at certain borders. A private transfer is the most practical option for most of these routes — door-to-door pickup, flexible schedule, and all border paperwork handled by the driver.

Each cross-border route has its own characteristics: Skopje→Pristina is the shortest international run, Skopje→Belgrade is the longest, and Skopje→Sofia is the main route eastbound toward Bulgaria and beyond. Check current entry requirements for your nationality before travel.

Travel tips

Matka Canyon: Short trip from Skopje. Boat and kayak activities at the canyon are paid separately at the venue; transfer covers the drive only.
Ohrid: The drive south takes most of a morning. Hotel-to-hotel pickup/dropoff possible at both ends.
Cross-border timing: Border duration varies. Travel before 9am or after 4pm in peak summer to avoid the busiest crossing times.
Currency: North Macedonia uses denars (MKD); euros widely accepted at tourist venues. Our prices are quoted in euros.
