Dubrovnik to Theth — what to expect

This is one of the great Adriatic-to-Alps journeys — from the marble streets of Dubrovnik to Theth, the most famous village in the Albanian Alps, in a single comfortable day. The 248 km route crosses Croatia into Montenegro at Debeli Brijeg, runs the coast to Ulcinj, crosses into Albania at Muriqan, passes Shkodër, and climbs the paved SH21 over the Boga pass into the mountains. Two borders and one spectacular mountain road.

A full day — start early

At roughly five and a half hours plus two border stops, this is a full-day transfer; an early Dubrovnik pickup gets you into Theth with daylight to spare. The SH21 is paved but slow, so we plan the timing around it. Doing the Theth→Valbona trek? We can collect you from Valbonë or the Koman ferry afterwards — ask for a combined quote. Passports stay in the car for both crossings.

Route FAQ

Dubrovnik to Theth questions

Everything specific to this route.

How long is the Dubrovnik to Theth transfer?

+

About 5h 30m for 248 km, including two border stops and the mountain road from Shkodër. We recommend an early start so you reach Theth in daylight.

How many borders?

+

Two — Croatia into Montenegro at Debeli Brijeg, then Montenegro into Albania at Sukobin–Muriqan. That's one more than a Kotor-origin trip, which is reflected in the distance and time.

Is the mountain road to Theth okay?

+

Yes — the SH21 from Shkodër is fully paved, though narrow and winding over the Boga pass. Comfortable in a standard car from late spring to mid-autumn; we confirm conditions for shoulder-season travel.

What's the price and what's included?

+

From €390 per vehicle (sedan, 1–3 passengers), not per person — fuel, all tolls, both borders, an English-speaking driver and door-to-door service to your guesthouse. Minivans are quoted on the same page.

Can you pick us up from Valbonë later?

+

Yes. The classic plan is Theth in, Valbona pass hike, then a pickup from Valbonë or the Koman ferry terminal. Tell us your dates and we'll quote the return leg too.

"An epic drive — Dubrovnik to the Albanian Alps in one day. Two borders, both painless with our driver handling everything. The road into Theth at the end was unforgettable. Worth it to skip two days of buses."

★★★★★

"We had a lot of hiking gear and this was the only sane way to get from the coast into Theth. On time, comfortable, and the driver picked us up from Valbonë four days later. Faultless."
