Banja Luka to Sarajevo, stop by stop

Drive from Banja Luka to Sarajevo in about 3h 30m. Private transfer from €330 per vehicle, all-inclusive — fuel, English-speaking driver, door-to-door.

A

Banja Luka

Your hotel or address Departure

Pickup anywhere in the city. The road runs south along the Vrbas and into its canyon almost immediately — the best twenty minutes of scenery on the route come before most passengers have settled in.

Quick stop free · extended visit +€30

Jajce

64 km from Banja Luka ~1h 10m

Medieval royal capital, and the one stop almost everyone takes. A 22-metre waterfall drops through the middle of the town where the Pliva meets the Vrbas, the fortress above it is where the last Bosnian king was crowned in 1461, and the second AVNOJ session met here in November 1943. The Pliva lakes and their watermills are 6 km upstream.

★
Quick stop free · extended visit +€15

Travnik

166 km from Banja Luka ~2h 20m

The Ottoman vizier capital of Bosnia from 1697 to 1850 and the birthplace of Nobel laureate Ivo Andric. The two-tower citadel sits above the town, the Sulejmanija mosque is painted inside rather than tiled, and the local cheese is worth the ten minutes it takes to buy some.

B

Sarajevo

Your hotel or address Arrival

Past Visoko the road climbs to Ivan Sedlo at 970 m and then drops into the Sarajevo valley, which is the moment the city appears rather than arrives. Drop-off anywhere — Bascarsija, the city centre, Ilidza, or the airport.

About the Banja Luka to Sarajevo transfer

Banja Luka to Sarajevo is 256 km and takes about 3 hours 30 minutes. Both cities are in Bosnia and Herzegovina, so the drive is domestic throughout — no border posts, no passport checks, one currency. You cross the entity line between Republika Srpska and the Federation on the way, which is an administrative line rather than a frontier and has nothing to stop for.

The road runs south from Banja Luka down the Vrbas canyon to Jajce, then east along the Lasva valley through Donji Vakuf and Travnik, past Visoko, and over Ivan Sedlo at 970 m into the Sarajevo basin. It is secondary road nearly the whole way, well surfaced and consistently scenic, and it passes two of the most atmospheric towns in the country within the first two and a half hours.

Longer than the Mostar road, and an hour quicker

Banja Luka to Mostar is 232 km — 24 km shorter — and takes about an hour longer, because that route crosses the Makljen pass on slower road. If you are choosing which Bosnian city to pair with Banja Luka, the arithmetic is not what the map suggests.

Why a private transfer

The bus takes five to six hours and the train does not run this corridor usefully. A car does it in three and a half, fits Jajce and Travnik in without adding much, and delivers you to a door in Sarajevo rather than to the bus station at Ilidza. For two people with luggage it is rarely more expensive than two bus tickets and a taxi.

Worth building into the drive

  • Jajce — waterfall in the town centre and the fortress of the last Bosnian king
  • Travnik — vizier citadel, the painted mosque, and Ivo Andric’s birthplace
  • Pliva lakes — watermills on the water, a short detour above Jajce
  • Ivan Sedlo — the 970 m pass where the road drops into Sarajevo
Two stops fit comfortably on this route without turning it into a long day: Jajce at about an hour ten, Travnik at about two twenty. Doing both adds roughly an hour and a half and is the reason most people pick this road over the direct one.
Route FAQ

Banja Luka to Sarajevo — common questions

Everything specific to this route.

How long does the drive from Banja Luka to Sarajevo take?

+

About 3 hours 30 minutes for 256 km without stops. With Jajce and Travnik added, plan for five hours door to door.

Do I cross a border between Banja Luka and Sarajevo?

+

No. Both cities are inside Bosnia and Herzegovina. You cross from Republika Srpska into the Federation, but that is an internal entity line — no checks, no documents, same currency.

Can we stop in Jajce and Travnik?

+

Yes, and most guests do at least one. Jajce is about an hour and ten minutes in, Travnik about two hours twenty. A quick stop at either is free; a longer visit is priced when you book so there are no surprises.

Is this quicker than going via Mostar?

+

To Sarajevo, yes. Banja Luka to Sarajevo is 24 km longer than Banja Luka to Mostar and takes about an hour less, because the Mostar road crosses the Makljen pass on slower surface.

What does the transfer cost?

+

From €330 per vehicle rather than per person, including fuel and an English-speaking driver. A minivan for a larger group is €420.

Can you drop us at Sarajevo Airport instead?

+

Yes. The airport is on the far side of the city from this road, so it adds about twenty minutes. Tell us the flight number and we plan the departure backwards from it.
