Home to the UNESCO-listed Mehmed Paša Sokolović Bridge — the 16th-century Ottoman masterpiece immortalised in Ivo Andrić's Nobel Prize-winning novel 'The Bridge on the Drina'.
Višegrad sits in eastern Bosnia on the Drina river, home to the UNESCO-listed Mehmed Paša Sokolović Bridge — the 16th-century Ottoman stone bridge that inspired Ivo Andrić's Nobel Prize-winning novel The Bridge on the Drina. From Sarajevo it's a 2h10 drive east (155 km) through the Drina valley. No border crossings; entire route within Bosnia (Federation BiH → Republika Srpska).
Most guests do this as a full day from Sarajevo (8–9 hours total) — early pickup, lunch on the Drina riverside, afternoon at the bridge + Andrićgrad (Emir Kusturica's surreal stone-town film set), return for evening dinner in Sarajevo.
The 155 km route runs east from Sarajevo through Pale, climbs over the Romanija mountain pass, descends through Sokolac into the Drina valley, then south alongside the river to Višegrad. The road is paved and well-maintained but two-lane, with mountain switchbacks and several small villages. Realistic drive time: 2 hours 10 minutes outside summer rush.
No border crossings — the route crosses the Federation BiH / Republika Srpska entity line at Pale (no passport check, just internal Bosnia). Cyrillic alphabet becomes more common after Pale.
For a single full-day visit, private transfer is the cleanest option.
Per vehicle, not per person. Includes your driver, fuel, and door-to-door service. Round-trip available.
About 2 hours 10 minutes for the 155 km drive east through the Drina valley. No border crossings — entire route within Bosnia.
UNESCO World Heritage since 2007. 11 stone arches spanning the Drina, 179.5m long, completed 1577 by Ottoman architect Mimar Sinan (or his school). Inspired Ivo Andrić's Nobel Prize-winning novel The Bridge on the Drina. Free to walk; the centerpiece of any Višegrad visit.
A small reconstruction of an Ottoman/Ragusan stone city built 2014 by film director Emir Kusturica next to the historic bridge. Includes Orthodox church, library, theatre, restaurants, small Andrić museum. €5 entry. Photogenic and surreal — designed to look like a film set, which it functionally is.
3–4 hours covers the bridge + Andrićgrad + lunch on the Drina. Add 2–3 hours if you want Lake Perućac. Most guests find 4 hours total at Višegrad sufficient for a single visit.
Yes — Višegrad to Belgrade is about 5 hours via Užice (Serbia). One-way Sarajevo → Višegrad → Belgrade is a popular eastern Balkans route; tell us if you want this routing.
The bridge is photogenic in any season. Winter brings snow on the bridge and the Drina; restaurants reduce hours but main attractions remain open. The mountain road to Pale can be slippery; check forecast before booking December–March.
