About the Trip

Sarajevo to Travnik — what the day looks like

Travnik is the former seat of Bosnia's Ottoman viziers — for nearly 150 years (1697–1850) it was the de facto capital of Ottoman Bosnia, hosting 77 viziers and the European consulates that came with them. It's also the birthplace of Ivo Andrić, Yugoslav Nobel Prize winner (1961). From Sarajevo it's a 1h15 drive northwest (95 km), making Travnik one of the most accessible day trips from Sarajevo. No border crossings; entire route within Bosnia.

Most guests do this as a half-day from Sarajevo (5–6 hours total) — late-morning pickup, lunch in Travnik old town (the local ćevapi are widely considered among Bosnia's best), afternoon at the fortress + Painted Mosque + Andrić Museum, return for evening dinner in Sarajevo. Combines naturally with Jajce for a longer full day.

What's included in the day trip

  • Door-to-door pickup from Sarajevo hotel
  • English-speaking driver familiar with central Bosnia
  • Air-conditioned vehicle with bottled water
  • No border crossings (entire route within Bosnia)
  • Driver waits in Travnik while you explore
  • Optional Jajce extension on the same day
  • Return drive to Sarajevo
💡 Insider tip: Travnik's ćevapi are smaller and rounder than Sarajevo's — locals debate endlessly. Hari is consistently rated the best, but Lutvo and Bosna have their loyalists. Order a "desetka" (10-piece portion) and decide for yourself.
The Route

What the drive looks like

The 95 km route runs northwest from Sarajevo on the M5 road through the Lašva valley. Modern paved road, mostly two-lane, no significant elevation changes. Realistic drive time: 1h15 each way outside summer rush.

No border crossings — the entire route is within Bosnia (Federation BiH). Travnik is the natural midpoint stop on Sarajevo–Jajce or Sarajevo–Banja Luka routes if you're continuing further.

Day Trip FAQ

Sarajevo to Travnik questions

How long does the Sarajevo to Travnik transfer take?

+

About 1h 15m for the 95 km drive northwest on the M5. No border crossings.

What's the must-see in Travnik?

+

Travnik Fortress (medieval stronghold above town with panoramic views), Painted Mosque (18th-century mosque with floral facade murals), Andrić House Museum (birthplace of Nobel Prize winner Ivo Andrić), and lunch ćevapi at Hari (locally rated among Bosnia's best).

Why is Travnik historically important?

+

From 1697 to 1850 (~150 years) Travnik was the de facto capital of Ottoman Bosnia — seat of the Bosnian viziers and host to 7 European consulates. Ivo Andrić was born here in 1892 and won the 1961 Nobel Prize in Literature; Travnik features prominently in his novels.

How long do I need at Travnik?

+

3 hours covers the fortress + Painted Mosque + Andrić Museum + lunch. Add 1 hour for Plava Voda spring + leisurely walking. Half-day from Sarajevo is 5–6 hours total.

Can I combine Travnik with Jajce?

+

Yes — and many guests do. Jajce is 60 km further north on the same route. Combined Sarajevo → Travnik → Jajce → return is a 9–10 hour day. Good combination for medieval (Jajce) + Ottoman (Travnik) Bosnia history in one day.

What's the best ćevapi place in Travnik?

+

Hari is consistently rated highest. Lutvo and Bosna have their loyalists. All three serve smaller, rounder ćevapi than Sarajevo (Travnik has its own regional style). Plates from €5–7 for a 10-piece (desetka).

How do I book?

+

Send us a message on WhatsApp with your date, number of passengers, pickup address in Sarajevo, and whether you want the Jajce combination. We confirm within minutes.
