About the Trip

Sarajevo to Jahorina — what the day looks like

Jahorina is Sarajevo's Olympic mountain — host of the 1984 Winter Olympics, peak elevation 1,916m. From Sarajevo it's a 30 km drive south on the M-18 mountain road, about 45–60 minutes depending on conditions (longer in winter snow). Today Jahorina is one of the best-value ski destinations in Europe (lift pass €30–40/day, on-mountain dining €15–25 per meal) and an underrated summer hiking + mountain biking destination.

Most guests do this as a half-day or full-day depending on activity. Winter ski day = 8–10 hours (early pickup, full ski day, evening return). Summer hiking day = 6–8 hours. Off-season visits to see the abandoned Olympic sites are 4–5 hour half-days.

What's included in the day trip

  • Door-to-door pickup from Sarajevo hotel
  • English-speaking driver familiar with the mountain road in all seasons
  • Air-conditioned vehicle (winter: snow-rated tires + chains in vehicle if forecast snow)
  • No border crossings (entire route within Bosnia)
  • Driver waits at the resort base or trailhead
  • Optional second pickup point if your group is split (ski school + lodge)
  • Return drive to Sarajevo
💡 Insider tip: For ski days, leave Sarajevo by 8:00 am to be on the lifts at 9:30 — Jahorina's ski lifts open at 9 and the first 1.5 hours have the freshest snow. For summer hiking, an earlier pickup (7:00 am) gets you on the alpine meadows before midday heat.
The Route

What the drive looks like

The 30 km route runs south from Sarajevo on the M-18 road, climbing from 540m elevation in Sarajevo basin to 1,650m at Jahorina ski resort base. Mountain road with switchbacks; in winter the upper sections require winter tires (mandatory by Bosnian law November–April) and occasionally chains. We run snow-rated vehicles year-round on this route.

Realistic drive time: 45 minutes outside winter snow conditions; 60–75 minutes in heavy snow. The road is regularly cleared (Jahorina is a major ski destination for Bosnia + Serbia + Montenegro markets) but driving the serpentines requires experience. Foreign drivers in rental cars regularly struggle with the climb in winter.

Day Trip FAQ

Sarajevo to Jahorina questions

How long does the Sarajevo to Jahorina transfer take?

+

About 45 minutes outside winter snow; 60–75 minutes in heavy snow. 30 km on the M-18 mountain road south of Sarajevo, climbing from 540m to 1,650m elevation.

Is winter driving to Jahorina dangerous?

+

The road is regularly cleared and major resorts depend on it. With winter tires (mandatory in Bosnia Nov–Apr) and experience, manageable. For foreign drivers in rental cars unfamiliar with mountain serpentines, a private driver is significantly safer. We run snow-rated vehicles year-round.

What does Jahorina cost (lift pass + meals)?

+

Lift pass: €30–40/day (one of the best-value ski deals in Europe). Equipment rental: ~€20/day. Mountain restaurant meal: €15–25. Day spa access at resort hotels: €30–60. Add to the transfer for full day cost.

What's the ski season at Jahorina?

+

Mid-December through early April typically. December and March are shoulder months with variable snow; January and February are the most reliable. Snow guns supplement natural snow on the lower runs.

Is there summer hiking at Jahorina?

+

Yes — June–September. Best trails: Jahorina summit ridge (panoramic views over Sarajevo and Republika Srpska), the Trebević viewpoints (combine with abandoned Olympic bobsled track), alpine meadow loops near the resort base. Most trails are well-marked but uneven; sturdy hiking shoes essential.

Can I see the 1984 Olympic sites?

+

Yes. Jahorina hosted the women's Alpine skiing events. The Olympic ski runs are still in use. The famous abandoned bobsled track is on the neighboring Trebević mountain (5 minutes by transfer from Jahorina or 30 minutes from Sarajevo). Photographic, melancholy, free to walk.

How do I book?

+

Send us a message on WhatsApp with your date, number of passengers, pickup address in Sarajevo, and whether it's a ski day, hiking day, or Olympic site visit. We confirm availability and pricing within minutes.
