Your own driver from Munich to Hohenschwangau, the last place to park below Neuschwanstein Castle, and back the same day. The driver waits while you visit.
The driver collects you in Munich and drives about 120 km south-west to the village of Hohenschwangau. Cars are not allowed on the road up to Neuschwanstein Castle, so this is where you get out and the driver waits.
The route. Mostly the A 95 and the B 17, about 120 km and roughly 1h 45m each way. The plain round trip is about 235 km, roughly 3h 30m of driving.
The places. Neuschwanstein is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site “The Palaces of King Ludwig II of Bavaria”, inscribed in 2025. A visit inside is only possible as part of a guided tour, and tours run at a fixed time on your ticket.
The pace. You decide how long you stay. From the ticket centre the official site gives about 30–40 minutes on foot up a steep road of around 1.5 km, so plan your tour time with that walk in mind.
The village below the castles and, per the official castle page, the last opportunity to park. The ticket centre is here, and the walk to Neuschwanstein starts here.
Reached on foot (about 30–40 minutes uphill) or by horse-drawn carriage, which stops about 450 metres below the castle. The carriages are run by independent companies, not the Bavarian Palace Administration. Guided and audio-guide tours last approximately 30 minutes.
Another of the Ludwig II palaces in the same World Heritage Site, in the Graswang Valley near Ettal. It too is visited only on a guided tour. The road there from Hohenschwangau runs briefly through Austria.
Both lie near the road back towards Munich and can be added on the way home.
Neuschwanstein is one of the four palace complexes of King Ludwig II listed by UNESCO in 2025, built between 1868 and 1886.
You are dropped in Hohenschwangau, the closest a car can go, and the driver is there when you come back down.
Linderhof, part of the same UNESCO listing, adds about 25 minutes of driving to the day.
