Tirana Airport to the City and Durrës: Every Option

Practical Info By Armel Sukovic 8 min read Published September 18, 2026
Quick answer

Tirana International Airport is 15 km north-west of the city centre at Rinas, a drive of about 27 minutes. Three ways in: the Rinas Express bus, which the airport itself publishes at 400 lekë (about €4), leaving every full hour around the clock to a stop behind the Palace of Opera and Ballet by Skanderbeg Square; an airport taxi, quoted at around 2,200 lekë (about €22) though drivers often ask more at night; or a pre-booked transfer that meets you at arrivals. Durrës is 37 km from the terminal, about 37 minutes, and slightly closer to the airport than it is to central Tirana.

Albania’s only international airport of any size sits at Rinas, 15 km north-west of Tirana, and the drive into the centre takes about 27 minutes when the road is clear.

The unusual thing about arriving here is not the distance. It is that two different bus lines serve the terminal at two different fares, and almost every guide mentions only one of them.

What the airport publishes

Unusually for this region, quite a lot — and it publishes two bus lines, not one:

LineFareFrequencyHoursJourney
Tirana – Rinas400 ALL / €4every full hour24/730–40 min
South/North Bus Terminal – Rinas300 ALL / €3every full hour07:00–18:0020–30 min

Both are run by LU-NA SHPK. The Tirana line terminates behind the Palace of Opera and Ballet, by Skanderbeg Square.

The second line is the one almost nobody mentions: a euro cheaper, and the right choice if you are connecting to an intercity coach rather than heading into the centre.

How much is the bus from Tirana Airport to the city?

400 lekë, about €4, and the airport publishes the figure itself. The bus is operated by LU-NA and known locally as the Rinas Express. It leaves every full hour, around the clock, and drops you behind the Palace of Opera and Ballet, a short walk from Skanderbeg Square. Reckon on 30 to 40 minutes.

For a solo traveller with a rucksack landing at a civilised hour, this is comfortably the best value way into Tirana, and the round-the-clock schedule is genuinely unusual — most airport buses in the region stop when the evening flights do.

What it does not do is take you to your door, and Tirana’s centre is larger and hotter than it looks on a map.

What should a taxi from Tirana Airport cost?

The commonly quoted figure is about 2,200 lekë, roughly €22, and it is quoted as a fixed airport fare rather than a meter reading.

The caveat repeats across every account of this route: drivers frequently ask for more, particularly on late arrivals. Agree the price before the boot closes. Unlike the bus fares, this one is not a figure the airport itself puts on the page, so treat it as the going rate rather than a tariff you can point at.

Ride-hailing is not the fallback here that it is elsewhere in the region — see our guide to taxi apps in the Balkans for how patchy coverage is once you leave Croatia.

Is Durrës closer to the airport than Tirana is?

Not quite, but it is closer than most people assume: 37 km from the terminal against Tirana’s 15. The drive is about 37 minutes, and — this is the part that surprises people — Durrës is very slightly nearer the airport than it is to the middle of Tirana, because the airport sits north-west of the capital and the coast road cuts across.

If your trip is a beach trip, you do not have to go into Tirana first. Plenty of arrivals do, lose three hours to it, and then drive back out past the airport.

For a direct airport-to-coast run the reliable options are a pre-booked transfer or a taxi. Third-party sites advertise a direct bus; the airport’s own bus page lists only the two Tirana lines, so the dependable public-transport plan is the 300-lekë line to the intercity terminals and a coach from there — which is fine if you have the afternoon and poor if you have a hotel check-in.

When is a transfer the right call from TIA?

Late arrivals. Tirana takes a lot of night flights, and while the bus runs through the night, arriving at Skanderbeg Square at 2am with luggage and then finding onward transport is a different proposition from being driven to the door.

Going anywhere but central Tirana. The bus has one destination. Durrës, Shkodër, Krujë, the Riviera and the mountain roads all start with a car.

Two or more people with bags. Two taxi fares negotiated without a published tariff, or four bus tickets plus an onward taxi, close the gap quickly.

Onward the same day. Sarandë and the southern Riviera are a long drive from TIA — the sort of day where being met at arrivals by someone tracking the flight matters more than the fare.

What about the other direction?

Leaving is easier than arriving, because you can plan it. The Rinas Express runs from the centre on the same round-the-clock pattern, and the road out is the same 27 minutes in reverse — but it is the one leg of an Albanian trip with a hard deadline, and Tirana’s traffic in the morning peak is not a thing to gamble a flight on.

Our Tirana Airport transfers run in both directions with the pickup timed off your departure rather than off a bus timetable.
