Four kilometres from Lake Bled, the Radovna river carves a slot through the rock, and a wooden boardwalk threads right along the cliff face above the water. Vintgar Gorge is one of Slovenia’s most photographed short walks — turquoise pools, white rapids, and a walkway that seems to hang over the river the whole way.
What to expect
The route is a 1.6 km boardwalk that criss-crosses the gorge on little bridges, following the clear green-blue water past rapids and still pools. It’s flat and easy, but narrow and often wet, so it can be slow when busy. At the far end is the Šum waterfall, the largest river waterfall in Slovenia. Allow 1.5 to 2 hours round trip.
Built in 1893, the walkway has been carrying visitors for well over a century — part of the charm is how the old timber path clings to the rock.
Practical notes
In peak summer, entry is by timed ticket and slots book out — reserve ahead. The gorge closes over winter (roughly December to March) for safety, so check current opening dates. Wear shoes with grip; the boards get slippery.
Getting there & pairing
Vintgar is about 4 km from Lake Bled. A seasonal shuttle runs from Bled, but most visitors drive or come by transfer — it’s the obvious pairing with the lake.
The classic half-day is Bled and Vintgar together: the lake and island in the morning, the gorge after, or the reverse. A driver who can link them skips the shuttle queue and the parking hunt.
When to go
Late spring and September are ideal — full water, green forest, and fewer people than midsummer. Go early to beat the coaches and get the boardwalk to yourself for a stretch. The gorge is at its loudest and fullest after rain or spring snowmelt.
