Klis Fortress: Visitor & Transfer Guide

Klis Fortress sits on a 360-meter limestone ridge directly above Split, controlling the only natural pass between the coast and the Dalmatian interior. For 2,000 years it was the most strategically important fortification on the Croatian coast — Romans, medieval Croatian kings, Ottomans, Venetians, and Habsburgs all fought over it.

Most modern visitors come for one reason: Game of Thrones. Klis served as Meereen, Daenerys Targaryen’s slave city, in seasons 4 and 5. The establishing shots, the city gate, and the climactic scene where her forces capture Meereen were filmed at Klis.

How to get to Klis

The drive from Split is straight up the D1 road north. Easy — modern road, decent signage, parking at the fortress base.

Klis as a transfer stop

The standard arrangement is a half-day excursion from Split:

• 9:00 am pickup from Split hotel
• 9:15 am arrival at Klis
• 9:30 am–11:00 am at the fortress
• 11:30 am back in Split for late lunch

For a fuller day, combine Klis with Trogir (30 minutes drive northwest) for a 5-hour excursion: Split → Klis (1.5h fortress) → Trogir (2h old town walk + lunch) → Split.

What to see at Klis

The fortress walls — climb to the top of the upper bailey for the panoramic view over Split, the bay, the islands of Brač and Šolta, and inland to the Mosor mountains. On clear days you can see the entire Split peninsula.

The Game of Thrones spots — the eastern walls and entrance gate were used for the Meereen establishing shots and the city’s main gate. Most visitors stop for the iconic photo angle.

The small museum — exhibits cover the fortress’s role in the Croatian-Ottoman wars (Klis was held by the Croatian-Hungarian forces, then taken by Ottomans in 1537, then retaken by Venetians in 1648). Modest but informative.

The Mosor mountain views — the fortress sits at the gateway between the coastal plain and the inland Dinaric Alps. The geographic transition is dramatic from the ramparts.

Klis vs Diocletian’s Palace

Both are major Split-area fortifications but they’re very different:

• Diocletian’s Palace is a Roman emperor’s retirement palace (built ~305 AD), now the heart of Split’s old town. Free to enter (it’s a working medieval city). Crowded but immersive.
• Klis Fortress is a strategic mountain stronghold. €10 entry, on a 360-meter ridge 15 minutes from Split. Quieter, with the panoramic view + GoT angle.

Most Split visitors do Diocletian’s Palace as the primary thing and Klis as a half-day add-on. Both fit comfortably in a 2-3 night Split itinerary.

Game of Thrones pilgrimage

• Klis = Meereen (Daenerys’s slave city, seasons 4-5)
• Dubrovnik = King’s Landing (Cersei’s Red Keep, the Iron Throne room interiors, the walk of shame)
• Trsteno Arboretum (near Dubrovnik) = King’s Landing royal gardens
• Lokrum Island (Dubrovnik) = Qarth and the Iron Throne replica display

Practical info

• Wear sturdy shoes. The fortress climb is uneven stone stairs, sometimes wet. Not flip-flops.
• Bring water in summer. The exposed ramparts are hot from June-September.
• Cash backup. The ticket booth accepts cards but cash is often faster in summer queues.
• Allow time before/after for the drive — Split traffic in peak summer can stretch 15 minutes to 30.
